Being adopted is a lifelong experience, not a single event.
And while everyone’s journey is different, there are some things we all have in common... the questions that never quite go away, feelings that keep resurfacing and the deep desire to understand who we are and where we belong.
Connection is medicine.
I was adopted as an infant, and for most of my life, I had no connection to my biological family. That changed in the last five years when I finally found them. This has been an experience that was both life-changing and deeply complex.
Over the years, I’ve also been heavily involved in the adoptee community, particularly during COVID, where I connected with people worldwide who shared the same unspoken experiences and struggles. And for the past year and a half, I’ve been running a monthly adoptee support group in Wellington, offering a space where others can share, process, and just be with people who get it.
That’s why this work matters so much to me. Because I know how isolating it can feel to carry something so fundamental to your identity while the rest of the world doesn’t quite understand.
